Bhediya box office collection Day 2: Varun Dhawan’s film needs to pick up pace

Varun Dhawan’s Bhediya released in the theaters on November 25. The film is doing decent business at the box office.

In Short

Bhediya released on November 25.
It stars Varun Dhawan and Kriti Sanon.
The film is directed by Amar Kaushik.

By India Today Web Desk: Varun Dhawan and Kriti Sanon’s horror-comedy Bhediya hit the screens on November 25. Seeing Varun turn into a werewolf had the audience’s interest piqued, however, its box office numbers are just decent. According to reports, on Day 2, Bhediya’s collection in India were up by 35-40 per cent as it collected in the range of Rs 9.25-9.50 crore. This brings the two-day nett to Rs 17 crore. Bhediya is competing with Ajay Devgn’s Drishyam 2.

BHEDIYA BOX OFFICE COLLECTION

Kriti Sanon and Varun Dhawan’s werewolf drama Bhediya is directed by Amar Kaushik, who brought the horror-comedy genre back with Stree (2018). While Stree wrecked havoc at the box office, Bhediya’s numbers don’t look too promising yet. It opened with just decent numbers on Day 1. It raised over Rs 12 crore in gross box office collection worldwide on its opening day.

For the second day, Box Office India stated, “Bhediya (Hindi) has decent growth on Saturday of around 35-40% as it collected in the 9.25-9.50 crore nett range. It probably needed higher growth on Saturday due to the low first day but this 35-40% is decent and keeps the film in the race if Sunday can show a good jump. The two-day collections of the film will be 15.50-15.75 crore nett which remains low but after the opening, it is really about making ground post the weekend.”

Talking about the poor quality of Bhediya’s VFX, BOI wrote, “The film is also released in 3D so this should have also helped the bigger centres but the response to 3D is also poor. Bhediya also seems to be set in the North East which takes away a lot of relatability compared to a rural film set in the heartland. Obviously, this is done for fresher locales and a more a picturesque look for the film but the characters become less relatable for the core audience.”

ABOUT BHEDIYA

Bhediya is a comedy horror film directed by Amar Kaushik and produced by Dinesh Vijan. The film stars Varun Dhawan and Kriti Sanon in the lead roles. This is Kriti’s second film with Varun after Dilwale (2015). Bhediya is actually the third installment in Vijan’s horror-comedy universe. It hit the theatres on November 25. Set in Arunachal Pradesh, the storyline of Bhediya follows a young man named Bhaskar who gets bitten by a wolf in the forest. Eventually, he starts transforming into a werewolf too. The music of the film is composed by Sachin-Jigar while the lyrics are written by Amitabh Bhattacharya.

Drishyam 2 Movie Review: Ajay Devgn’s film is high on thrills but it’s still not Drishyam

Ajay Devgn’s Drishyam 2 has plenty of nail-biting moments but it will somewhere leave you missing 2015 film, Drishyam. Here’s our review.

In Short

Drishyam 2 released on November 18 in theatres.
Ajay Devgn returns as Vijay Salgaonkar in the film.
The film also stars Shriya Saran, Tabu, Akshaye Khanna, Ishita Dutta, Mrunal Jadhav in key roles.

Drishyam 2 isn’t a film we recommend to those who haven’t watched the first part. It is a continuation in its truest sense. And it’s made evident with screenshots from the 2015 film Drishyam panning across the 70mm with opening credits. We are soon taken inside Vijay Salgaonkar’s somewhat okay-ish new life with his family amid all the haunting rumours from the past surrounding them. Well, that’s reality. People don’t forget drama and that is what is depicted in the film. Vijay and the Salgaonkar family, consisting of his wife Nandini (played by Shriya Saran), and two daughters, Anju and Anu (Ishita Dutta and Mrunal Jadhav), are trying to swim through their past and are attempting to start a new life. However, little do they know that they are far from closure. At least, until the end.

The director tries to set in the brevity of the situation with constant rain and storms that somewhat depict the seriousness of the scene and it works too. Also, Ajay shines as Vijay in this one. He is smart, ‘chalak’ as the police describe him, and futuristic. And he is a man who knows his sin and is ready to deal with the aftermath of it.

Shriya Saran plays the innocent Nandini who hasn’t had a single peaceful night’s sleep in the past seven years because the past haunts her. Anju is now dealing with epilepsy that aggravates every time she senses stress. Anu is all grown up but we don’t see a lot of substance to her character. Peace is short-lived for the Salgaonkars after IG Tarun Ahlawat (played by Akshaye Khanna) replaces Tabu. No, not in the film, but in her role. And Akshay does a great job too, with the taunts and grit of an officer, but we wanted more of Tabu. She is sparsely spread across the film and Akshay couldn’t create the dread that Tabu as IG Meera Deshmukh did in the first part.

In case you are wondering why there’s no mention of Gaitonde (played by Kamlesh Sawant) yet, you have nothing to worry. You’ll hate him in this part too, and there’s more edge to his character than the first one, and this only proves he has been successful in his endeavour. For instance, we love one of his dialogues where he says “Biwi ka birthday bhool sakta hoon, October 2 aur October 3 nahin.”

And there are multiple references to Drishyam in its sequel. For instance, the incidents that happened on October 2 and October 3 in the first part have become a national meme. The makers know it well and have utilised it in the same aspect. Every time Tabu or anyone else on screen utters these two dates and how they had pao bhaji and attended a satsang together, the audience would clap and break into bouts of laughter.

However, there were a few things that defied logic. For instance, the Salgaonkars were shown as a middle class family in Drishyam. The second part depicts him as a theatre owner. He has now moved into a fancy bungalow but his profession remains the same – owner of Miraj Cable and now owner of a theatre. Why and how the change would remind you of Suneil Shetty’s unbelievable rags-to-riches story of Dhadkan.

Gaitonde hits women as a part of the interrogation in front of a former female IG and talks about maintaining law and order at the same time. Was it an attempt to make the audience detest him more? That's a question we leave to the makers. Also, it would be safe to say that Drishyam was a lot more gripping. Drishyam 2 is no less, but still, not like the first one.

Drishyam 2 is the Hindi adaption of Mohanlal’s film of the same name. Ajay Devgn had promised us a different storyline. Don’t go with that mindset for you will be disappointed. There are a few plot twists here and there, but the majority remains the same. Not to forget, punched with Ajay’s magic.
