RRR and The Kashmir Files released after many delays. But both are doing equally well at the box office. Directed by SS Rajamouli, RRR released on March 25 in theatres and did spectacularly well on its first day. The Kashmir Files, directed by Vivek Agnihotri, opened to a slow start but slowly gained pace and entered the Rs 200 crore club in two weeks of run-time. Now that we have the day 1 box office collection of RRR, let’s compare how the two films fared at the BO on its first day.
RRR VS THE KASHMIR FILES DAY 1 BOX OFFICE
RRR opened worldwide on March 25 and, as per the box office numbers, it did phenomenally well on day 1. The first day box office collection is here and RRR minted a whopping amount of Rs 257.15 crore on day 1, according to trade analyst Manobala Vijayabalan. On the other hand, The Kashmir Files opened in limited theatres (630-plus screens) on its first day of release and still managed to rake Rs 3.55 crore. So good for both, we would say!

RRR is directed by SS Rajamouli of Baahubali fame. The film stars Ram Charan and Jr NTR in the lead. Alia Bhatt, Ajay Devgn, Samuthirakani, Ray Stevenson, Olivia Morris and Alison Doody play pivotal roles. The Kashmir Files is based on the life of Kashmiri Pandits in 1990, during the Kashmir insurgency. The film is a true story, based on video interviews of the first generation victims of The Kashmir Genocide of the Kashmiri Pandit Community. It’s a heart-wrenching narrative of the pain, suffering, struggle and trauma of Kashmiri pandits which also questions eye-opening facts about democracy, religion, politics and humanity. The film stars Anupam Kher, Mithun Chakraborty, Pallavi Joshi, Darshan Kumar, among others.

Runway 34 is a drama thriller based on the real incident that took place on the 2015 Jet Airways Doha-Kochi flight. It narrowly escaped disaster after facing difficulties due to poor visibility. The movie’s cast also features Carry Minati. The Akshay Kumar and Kriti Sanon starrer entertainer, Bachchhan Paandey has recorded a below the par trend in its opening weekend as the film collected in the range of Rs. 13 to 14 crore on it’s third day to take the total collection to approximately Rs. 39 crores. While there is a marginal hike as compared to Saturday, the big jump in the business was missing over the weekend.
While The Kashmir Files did take a toll on the business by around 20% through the weekend, the film couldn’t get the audience on board on Saturday and Sunday despite having ample capacity to perform, especially in national chains. While the mass belts were a little better on Sunday, the national chains were more or less in the same range as Friday.
The movie is now headed to be a disappointing affair at the box office, as a major chunk of showcasing will be taken over by RRR in the coming week. The movie needed a worldwide share of Rs 65 crore to breakeven, but as things stand, a share of Rs. 35 to 40 crore seems to be the best case scenario. The reviews were ranging from mixed to positive, and there was a little hope for the audience to enjoy the entertainer.
But that hasn’t happened and that seems to be due to competition from The Kashmir Files and also, lack of excitement created by the film in its pre-release campaign. Bachchhan Paandey opened at Rs 13.25 crore followed by a Saturday of Rs 12 crore and finally another Rs 13 crore plus day on Sunday. In an ideal world devoid of competition, the biz of Bachcchan Paandey would have been around 20% higher, closer to the Rs 50 crore mark.
